Best Practices for Peer Navigators

ABOUT THIS TOOL

Welcome to the world of peer navigation. In this manual, you will learn the foundations, practices, and strategies needed to establish and sustain a peer navigation program in your community.

At the heart of this work lies the belief that hiring youth with lived experience can fundamentally shape the services we provide, for the better. We recognize the immense value that comes from lived experience, and by offering Peer Navigators a livable wage, we can uplift them to become catalysts for change.

  • Section 1: Foundations for Starting a Peer Navigation Program

When starting any new program, it can feel overwhelming. Starting a Peer Navigation program may feel very different from other programs you or your agency have launched before. This section lays out the foundations for starting a Peer Navigation program.

  • Section 2: Best Practices for Agencies

It is important to clearly define the role and responsibilities of the Peer Navigator, including the expectations and qualifications for the position. Recruitment is just as important and incumbent on the human resource department and hiring managers to reach out to a diverse pool of candidates and utilize multiple recruitment channels. This section outlines best practices for equitable and intentional hiring practices for agencies.

  • Section 3: Best Practices for Peer Navigators

Our goal for this handbook is that it finds its way into the hands of Peer Navigators, who are working directly with young people. This section is for young people and walks through our favorite tips and strategies for young people to succeed in their roles as Peer Navigators.

  • Section 4: Supervisory Best Practices

The role of a supervisor is to provide guidance, support, and oversight to ensure that the peer navigator is effectively fulfilling their responsibilities and meeting the needs of the organization and its clients. This section walks through the specific role of a supervisor, navigating the sometimes blurry lines between supervisor and therapist, and establishing healthy boundaries that keep everyone safe, brave and supported.

“We should stop judging folks for not having a degree especially when it comes to social justice-related work, because often times we have decades worth of lived experience that we can pull from, but because we were struggling or experiencing homelessness, or just really being affected by the system at the time, we never had the opportunity to obtain a formal degree.”
