Hello from Venice, Ca!
Our remarkable California partner Safe Place for Youth (S.P.Y.), held their first Host Homes training on January 20 & 21 with the support of Point Source Youth. This two-day training introduced five potential hosts to the innovative host home program Safe Place for Youth is launching, led by Michal David, Host Home Coordinator. The training took place in Venice at Safe Place for Youth’s drop-in center and covered relevant topics for hosts like communication, the effects of trauma, and assertive listening.
Michal--along with Rachel Pedowitz, Director of Housing Advocacy, and Michelle DiBatisste, Drop-in Center Manager, --led participants through an overview of youth homelessness in Los Angeles and the services offered by SPY. Hosts then heard form youth directly on why host home programs are vital. One young person said, “ We’re looking for different options, for someone to learn from, for someone to mentor us.” Another youth stated,” it would be nice to have someone who cares and somewhere to go when it’s raining outside.”
SPY’s next training is scheduled for March 3rd in Venice Beach California. Please consider getting involved and/or spreading the word—it will take many of us working in community to assure that youth experiencing homelessness have a safe, warm place to rest their heads!
