Hello from Venice, Ca!
Things are moving quickly in sunny California and our partner organization, Safe Place for Youth (S.P.Y.), has been on the move! On Saturday, March 3, S.P.Y. hosted their second host home training with four potential hosts. After previously conducting a two-day training, Host Home Coordinator Michal David and Director of Housing Advocacy Rachel Pedowitz streamlined the training into one impactful day with hosts, youth, staff, and special guest Ryan Berg.
The training coved an overview of youth homelessness in Los Angeles and the many services offered by SPY, including the innovative new host home program. Hosts heard directly from youth about the need for safe, secure housing and their desire for mentors and adult allies. Ryan Berg, author of No House to Call My Home: Love, Family, and Other Transgressions, travelled all the way from Minneapolis for a book reading and Q & A with hosts about his experience leading a successful host home program.
SPY’s next training is already in the works and will be taking place in Venice Beach, California. Please consider getting involved and help us spreading the word! It will take many of us working in community to assure that youth experiencing homelessness have a safe, warm place to rest their heads.
